The Maracas

The Early History

From left to right, Dave Rhodes, Brian Donovan, Fred Seddon, Frank Baker and Tommy Cunningham. The Maracas were formed in 1963 by Dave and Fred who were in the same class at Liverpool Collegiate School.

Dave and Fred began singing together and 'drumming' on school desks. Before too long they decided to form a group and teamed up with three lads from 'Scotty Road', Tommy Cunningham, Frankie Baker and Brian 'Slack' Donovan. Dave, having the best voice, became the lead singer and also learned to play harmonica. Brian already played drums, Frankie and Tommy played guitar. What was missing was bass guitar so Fred decided he would take this on. He bought a S/H 'Burns' bass guitar and set about learning to play.

After much rehearsal they began to make a good sound together and started to play in local pubs and clubs. They were soon taken on by a manager, Kim Pemberton, who promoted them in Liverpool and beyond.
